Bonnington Plastics Ltd Announce Research Into Keeping Cats Safe At Christmas

UK wholesaler Bonnington Plastics Ltd today announced research they have undertaken into keeping cats safe at Christmas, a time when there are many ways they can unknowingly injure themselves.

The number of real Christmas trees sold each year is declining. In 1991, 37 million trees were sold, compared to just 31 million in 2007. The National Christmas Tree Association claim that the purchasing of real Christmas trees ebbs and flows, yet it is still declining. Many people are choosing to stray from the traditional path, for many different reasons.

There are lots of people who still choose to purchase traditional pine trees, as the figures show. However, pine trees are toxic to cats, of any age or size. They can also be harmful to dogs, although they are less inclined to tackle a pine tree than a cat would, in its playful nature. Pine tree's needles are often filled with poisonous things that could seriously damage or impair the life of a cat and, if swallowed, can tear the lining of their stomachs which causes further problems.

Plastic trees carry problems still, as sometimes they can be made from plastics that are just as sharp as the pine. However, these are less toxic to animals, due to not being treated with poisons. Often, the water that pine trees are left in contains many poisons if consumed. Things like pine resin, fire retardants, and preservatives. A curious cat will face many problems if they ingest this water. With kittens, placing tin foil or pine cones around the base of the pot can stop them from venturing too close.

When decorating a tree, whether it is pine or plastic, it is important to remember the cat's curious nature. Keeping the lower branches trimmed to a longer length than the higher branches can dampen curiosity. Although it is not fool proof. This is why decorating a tree on the higher branches is important.

It is important to keep baubles and decorations secure to a tree, to prevent them from falling despite being jolted. With wire fixtures, or clamping, it is simple to keep baubles and other things close to the tree. This results in cats staying safe, and trees looking wonderful.

Bonnington Plastics Ltd provides safe and fire retardant Christmas trees, perfect for families with pets and children alike. They are secure and simple, making them the best solution for people who want a Christmas tree that won't be harmful to themselves or the environment.
