Denver Broncos wide receiver Kenny McKinley was found dead in his apartment in an apparent suicide Monday, authorities said.

Denver Broncos wide receiver Kenny McKinley was found dead in his apartment in an apparent suicide Monday, authorities said.

Arapahoe County (Colo.) Sheriff Grayson Robinson said McKinley had died, apparently by his own hand, and that an investigation was ongoing, The Denver Post reported.

"It was apparently a suicide, but we're still investigating," Robinson said.

Robinson refused to disclose further details on the death of McKinley, 23, a second-year pro from the University of South Carolina.

McKinley had begun the 2010 campaign on the injured reserve list after playing in eight games for the Broncos last year in his rookie season, mostly on special teams, the newspaper said.

"Kenny had a promising future on the football field, but more importantly, he was a great teammate whose smile and personality could light up the room," Broncos head Coach Josh McDaniels said in a statement.
