Budding Talk Show Host Boldly Brings the Topic of Gangs to the Forefront
With gang violence and activity skyrocketing throughout the country talk show host/ actress Sha Dixon has her sights set on making a positive change in communities throughout America.
Online, March 28, 2013 (Newswire.com) - With gang violence and activity skyrocketing throughout the country one young woman is stepping up to be the face and voice of a movement targeting today's youth. Talk show host/ actress Sha Dixon is on a mission to encourage America's youth to end all gang violence and activity. Inspired by a personal experience Dixon has her sights set on making a positive change in communities across America.
"The Department of Justice estimates that there are almost 1 million gang members in America. 40% of those gang members are under the age of 18! To make matters worse, 90% of African American juvenile boys in correctional facilities are gang affiliated and they're joining as young as 12 years old. Clearly, this is a problem that needs to be solved," stated Dixon when asked why she decided to tackle this cause.
The fact that there are several highly influential hip-hop/pop artists who proudly and publicly claim to be members of gangs is causing quite a stir in communities across the country. "Often times, hip hop mocks or portrays the "street life" image to the youth of our urban community. The real problem sets in when kids that know nothing about subjects such as gang life start associating themselves with groups such as the bloods or crips. I do feel as though anyone with "higher knowledge" about the inner workings of our society has a moral responsibility to teach people right from wrong, but art often imitates life, whether or not the message is positive," said David "Drect" Williams, founder of Grind Time Now, the Worlds largest hip hop battle league when asked his thoughts on the relationship between hip hop and gangs.
Dixon has teamed up with L.A. based photographer Kem West to put together a 3-minute PSA encouraging America's youth to end all gang violence and activity. "I wanted to artistically deliver a positive message to a specific group of our youth. I pride myself in being a communicator so God willing, the people who this public service announcement is meant to touch will pay attention, take heed to the facts, and decide to make better decisions for themselves and their families" noted Dixon.
The Campaign to End Gang Violence and Activity will begin with the release of a video PSA on Friday April 5, 2013 via www.ShaDixon.net and various news and media sites. For more information or interviews please contact Kim Jackson at 614-209-9099 or by email at [email protected].
