Burke Rehabilitation Hospital Hosts Educational Conference for Caregivers

Burke Rehabilitation Hospital will host the “Fearless Caregiver Conference” to educate and provide assistance options for families and caregivers. The event will take place Nov. 8, 2018, from 10 a.m. to on 2:30 p.m. on Burke’s campus in White Plains (785 Mamaroneck Ave.) in honor of National Caregiver Month.

“The physical and emotional burden of becoming a caregiver is often overlooked in the medical world, but caring for a loved one is a significant responsibility in someone’s life,” Burke President and CEO Jeffrey Menkes said. “Resources such as our Marsal Caregiver Center, the first of its kind in the nation and the upcoming Fearless Caregiver Conference can be extremely helpful to families that are struggling to balance caring for their loved one and continuing to live their daily lives.”

The physical and emotional burden of becoming a caregiver is often overlooked in the medical world, but caring for a loved one is a significant responsibility in someone's life. Resources such as our Marsal Caregiver Center, the first of its kind in the nation and the upcoming Fearless Caregiver Conference can be extremely helpful to families that are struggling to balance caring for their loved one and continuing to live their daily lives.

The day-long conference will consist of two sessions during which a panel of experts will answer questions on a variety of topics including:

·       Helping caregivers learn how to legally protect aging parents;

·       Motivating family members to help;

·       Securing the future of an adult child, and

·       Other new challenges that arise from taking care of an aging parent or loved one.

Studies show caregiving takes a physical, mental and emotional toll on caregivers. Over time, up to 70 percent of full-time caregivers develop symptoms of depression from the stress and workload.

In an effort to support the loved ones who care for its patients, Burke opened the 1,657 square foot Marsal Caregiver Center in May 2018, the first of its kind in a rehabilitation hospital in the U.S. and the fifth caregiver center in the Montefiore Health System. The Center expands the definition of care, taking a holistic approach to what it means to provide aid for the health and welfare of the whole family, not just the patient.

Caregiver Media Group, the nation’s first integrated media organization serving caregivers online, in-print and in-person, is Burke’s partner in presenting the conference. Established in 1995, Caregiver Media Group has become the recognized media authority on caregiving through Today’s Caregiver magazine, Caregiver.com, the Fearless Caregiver Conferences and the award-winning book – “The Fearless Caregiver: How to get the best care for your loved one and still have a life of your own.”

The Fearless Caregiver Conference will be held in the Rosedale Room of the Billings Building (Building #4) on Burke’s White Plains campus. Vendors will be on hand throughout the day for attendees who want to find out more about services in the area.
