Butler Creative Solutions Introduces The Rising, An Art, Music, and Spoken Word Show, at Blackacre Nature Preserve and Historic Homestead
Online, June 24, 2014 (Newswire.com) - The monthly open-mic and art exhibition series is co-sponsored by Louisville Area Realtors and Blackacre Nature Preserve and Historic Homestead.
The first show is Friday, July 25 from 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. and features writer Bobbi Buchanan and musician Austin Whitely, aka Auzman Propaganda, Man, co-founders of the Homegrown Art, Music, and Spoken Word show held every other month at the Cedar Grove Coffee House in Shepherdsville.
The Rising, whose mission is to give local emerging performing artists, writers, and fine artists a platform to share art, music, and words, was co-founded by Cheryl Brandreth and Roseanne Green, the mother-daughter duo of Butler Creative Solutions, LLC. They were inspired by the Homegrown Art, Music, and Spoken Word show co-founded by Buchanan and Whitely.
"Going to Homegrown is like going to church," said Brandreth. "Homegrown has given people a platform for creative expression with art, music, and words.
"There are plenty of open-mic opportunities closer to downtown Louisville, but we wanted to provide an opportunity in the outlying part of Jefferson County," said Green. "Blackacre is the perfect venue." Green also works as Blackacre's event coordinator.
Buchanan is the author of Listen: Essays on Living the Good Life (Ginko Leaf Press, 2013) and the founding editor of New Southerner, an online journal focusing on self-sufficiency, environmental stewardship and local economies. Buchanan teaches academic writing at Jefferson Community and Technical College, serves as a member of the advisory board for the Green River Writers, and is programs coordinator for Color Your City Inc., a Bullitt County-based nonprofit that seeks to provide at-risk residents with channels for healing and the possibility of new life through engagement in the arts.
Whitely lives, works, and creates art and music in his native Bullitt County. His debut CD, Greatest Hits Vol. 3 & 4, details his experiences overcoming his brother's death, surviving multiple drug overdoses, coping with incarceration, and recovering in a homeless shelter. Whitely is a community organizer and a key volunteer with Color Your City Inc. Whitely blogs for New Southerner as "The Moderately Fed Artist," and is now at work on a second CD.
The Rising is free and open to the public. Open-mic signups start at 6:30 p.m. Heine Brothers will provide coffee at the first show. For more information, visit http://www.butlercreativesolutions.com/events.
