C-PRO is One South African Construction Firm That Can Actually Claim to Have Grown in the Past Year, Much to the Envy of its Competitors

Eddie Serton, CEO of C-PRO tells Construction Digital how his company managed to find success amid a tough economic climate.

(San Diego, CA)-2009 was a tough year. However, in adversity some find opportunity and that is exactly what C-PRO has done. Although the firm was pleased to see the arrival of 2010, 2009 was a year of many positives. "I think that it is fair to say that C-PRO emerged from the year much stronger and more capable of delivering than ever before," Eddie Serton, CEO, told Construction Digital.

Its merger with Unikon Construction was one of the main highlights. The acquisition has added valuable depth and capacity to its existing management structure.

Serton said: "Unikon was a company with people that we knew well, it was a great fit, everything has integrated nicely and now we look forward to a stronger future."

2009 also saw a big push when it came to BBBEE certification. C-PRO has achieved a Level 2 for Project Management and a Level 4 for its construction divisions. This is a significant step for the company and has opened up opportunities to pitch for government and quasi-government work from which it had previously been excluded because of the BBBEE requirements associated with these projects.

"I think, like anybody else in the world, South Africa has gone through a bit of a slump in the last 18 to 20 months," Serton added. "From our side the biggest positive is that we haven't just survived, we have actually grown. We have managed to increase capacity in the company and have had an acquisition that has grown our resource base. In the same time, we haven't had to retrench, which is an achievement in itself in the South African context at the moment."
