Elizabeth redesigned the existing kitchen/family room to combine functionality with a simplistic contemporary feel that would blend the Prairie School architectural structure of their home and the homeowner's love for nature. It was important to the homeowner to use locally crafted materials wherever possible and patronize local businesses. The challenge in this kitchen was to vent a hood to the outside and was solved by having a local metal artisan create a four-sided hood extension to match a Best Hood to span the difference between the 96" high wall and the vaulted ceiling. The island turned out to be a focal point with its locally crafted walnut countertop. The brilliant glass tile, granite countertops, copper door inserts, wood top, forged accent hardware and fireplace grills, porcelain floors, contemporary lighting fixtures and stainless steel appliances were suitable choices for this beautiful home.
