California Dance Company, a dance studio based in Anderson, California, was part of Team USA in the Show Dance World Championships held in Riesa, Germany from November 22 - 27, 2010. Over 28 countries from around the world competed with over 750 participants, and the event was carried live on the European television network. The pressure and excitement for the week long event was exciting and grueling. There were over 15 categories, and Team USA participated in most. For most of the entrants, their country provided the funding and assisted in many other ways. They helped with the design and construction of props, provided professional choreographers, costumes, paid for expenses, and much more to ensure maximum results.
For Team USA it was different. Each studio had to fend for themselves. In the case of California Dance Company, they ran a series of fund raisers to assist with the costs. Five students from the studio were on the team in two categories. Alyssa Banwarth, age 12, competed against 44 other world competitors in the Junior Solo Section age 12 to 15 and placed seventh. Rachael Morgan, Megan Beeson, Savannah Harris, and Taylor Cox competed against 43 world groups in the Adult Small Group age 16 to 26, and placed thirteenth.
The journey to represent the USA was long and difficult. Initially, California Dance Company's participants had to compete in Sacramento against 500 numbers. From the 500, only two numbers were nominated to the next phase. The next trip was to Boston in July. In Boston, California Dance Company went against the top 250 performers from the USA. The pressure from onset to conclusion was immense for these girls, but they held their ground and were victorious. What an experience.
The choreography and inspiration for the girls came from the owner of California Dance Company, Sonya Kennedy.
Congratulations to the girls, the parents, the studio, the support staff, and the numerous other individuals that made this happen.
Thank You
Sonya Kennedy
