California's Prop 29 Has Consumers Switching To Electronic Cigarette.
With Prop 29 on the June 2012 election ballet nearing, Californian smokers have more incentive on making electronic cigarettes their new smokeless alternative.
Online, April 18, 2012 (Newswire.com) - Prop 29 has some California smokers screaming to their computers in search of a more frugal cigarette substitute; electronic cigarettes . The once underground smoking alternative is making its way into main stream lifestyle as a cheaper and seemingly healthier alternative. Just $25 can get you started and $10 has a pack-a-day smoker occupied for nearly a week. Consumers are saving 2/3 their money on the costs of traditional cigarettes and with the recent tax increase on the horizon; more smokers may have even more of an incentive on using electronic cigarettes to subsidize their habit.
Electronic Cigarettes, in short, are generally made of two pieces; a battery and cartridge. The battery is rechargeable and could last up to a year's use. The cartridge is equivalent to one pack of cigarettes and generally is sold in a pack of five which can cost $10. When the user puffs on the e cigarette it activates a heating element inside the cartridge which causes a vapor to release.
Electronic Cigarettes are used identical to traditional cigarette; however instead smoke the user inhales a water vapor and nicotine solution. Electronic cigarettes are free from tar, odor, smoke and the nearly 5,000 carcinogens found in traditional cigarettes. This has some suggesting a better alternative for those who want to subsidize or quit their cigarette habit because it targets both the behavioral and chemical addiction of smoking.
Proposition 29 will be on the June 2012 election ballets and if approved by Californian voters, the cigarette tax will increase to a $1.00 per pack of cigarettes. With California's current .87 cents per pack, Prop 29 will bring the total tax price to $1.87 per pack of cigarettes.
Prop 29 is expected to generate 850 million in new tax revenue according to a 2012 report by the Californian Legislative Analyst office. All new revenue will be used to fund cancer research, smoking reproductive programs and tobacco law enforcement.
Though the tax initiative have some non-smokers agreeing with the increase, smokers argue another personal freedom is slowly being taken from them.
"I am an electronic cigarette user myself and I personally switched because I know smoking is bad. I know cancer, especially lung cancer, COPD and emphysema are the number one preventable diseases... But this tax is playing on the bleeding hearts of California. The increase is just another personal freedom the government is trying to control."
One a Southern California electronic cigarette user sites, who wishes to be anonymous,
"Californians are gouged left and right with gas prices and living expenses. I searched the Internet to find a cheaper smoking alternative because I knew it was only time my health and wallet were going to be affected by cigarettes.
