Can We Blame Our Genes for Obesity and Related Diseases?

Researchers discovered that other genes controlled by KLF-14 are linked to a range of metabolic conditions including BMI, obesity, cholesterol, insulin and glucose levels.

Not too long ago there was a flurry of new stories about the discovery of a gene by British researchers that appears to act as a "master switch" for many other genes found in fat tissue. They touted that their discovery could help in finding new treatments for obesity-related diseases. The gene, called KLF-14, was already known to have a role in type 2 diabetes and cholesterol levels. Apparently, the researchers discovered that other genes controlled by KLF-14 are linked to a range of metabolic conditions including BMI, obesity, cholesterol, insulin and glucose levels.

So, is this a good discovery?

"The search for drugs usually works in a backward fashion: looking to manipulate natural body functions after a disease appears," say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, who have worked with biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies for the past twenty years and are authors the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH).

"It seems obvious that the 'trigger' for expression of KLF-14 starts with abnormally high blood glucose levels and progresses in an orderly fashion from there. All experts agree that high levels of blood sugar result in the release of insulin, which in turn leads to storage of body fat. Chronically high levels of blood sugar are common when consuming an improper diet based around grains and other refined and processed foods and sugar."

"A proper diet eliminates grains and grain products, refined and processed foods along with sugar and other sweeteners and focuses instead on fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and animal proteins," adds Tom Griesel. "This allows the body to operate the way it was designed with maximum efficiency. Ideal body composition and optimal health require correct eating, which would result in much less disease, radically lower healthcare costs and a much diminished need to find new drugs to 'cure' us."
