Cardinal Santos Medical Center Opens Hand Center Equipped With Exclusive Robotic Rehab Technology

Cardinal Santos Medical Center introduced three firsts in the Philippine healthcare recently - the first Hand Center, the first robotics rehabilitation wing, and the first hospital mobile application - at a press launch.

At the forefront of providing advanced medical technology, the Cardinal Santos Medical Center (CSMC) recently opened its Hand Center to cater to patients in need of comprehensive care for all hand maladies - from physical impairments in the fingers all the way to the upper extremities.

Every manner of industry and occupation - from office workers, athletes, newspaper journalists to construction workers - requires manual dexterity and extensive use of one's hands. The new center offers treatment options to that most overused part of the body, thus one most prone to injury.

Newly appointed President and CEO of CSMC Atty. Pilar Nenuca P. Almira said, "We are proud to be the first to bring this kind of curative treatment in the Philippines. Our expert staff is composed of highly rated physicians who went through specialized training in hand care here and abroad."

The new CSMC Hand Center recognizes the essential role of hand mobility and function in ensuring that a person is able to perform his everyday tasks well. It has been equipped with the newest diagnostic systems for accurate identification of hand trauma, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Cubital Tunnel Syndrome, reconstruction of untreated injuries and complications, tendon injuries, peripheral nerve injuries and functional loss.

Of particular note, the center works closely with the Rehabilitation Medicine, which is exclusively equipped with robotic therapy for motor rehabilitation of upper extremities.

The recently acquired technology provides advanced rehabilitation for the hands, shoulders and arms for those afflicted with multiple sclerosis and other neurological conditions. The robotic technology facilitates motor learning by continually challenging the patient and encouraging active effort through precise and intensive exercises. The equipment is interactive and is able to respond to a patient's changing ability and capacity.

Developed through research in medical engineering at the Newman Laboratory for Biomechanics and Human Rehabilitation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, this InMotion robotic system has been proven especially beneficial for post-stroke patients.
The CSMC Hand Center is open from 9AM to 12NN from Monday to Saturday. Contact the CSMC Hand Center at 727-0001 local 2160.
