2011 CARNIVAL OF CARE Celebrating The Human Spirit by Honoring Survivors of Auto Accidents, brain injury and their caregivers

Did you know March is Brain Injury Awareness Month? A brain injury is a sudden event that can change lives- not only the life of the victim, but of their loved ones as well. Whether it is a mild, moderate or severe traumatic brain injury, the result can create serious permanent disabilities. Injuries to the brain require expert treatment to ensure the best possible outcome.

Celebrating the incredible work of caregivers and the intense recovery process of auto injury survivors is the Carnival of Care, a free event being held Saturday, March 12, at Best Western Sterling Inn, 34911 Van Dyke Ave , Sterling Heights , MI 48312 from 10 AM - 3 PM. Festival attendees are invited to take part in a variety of fun carnival-themed activities, including games, palm readings, massages, music, dancing, face painting, magicians, clowns and balloon artistry and prizes galore!

According to the Brain Injury Association of America, there are at least 5.3 million Americans living with a disability because of a brain injury and the estimated lifetime costs of brain injury (including direct medical costs and indirect costs such as lost productivity) totaled $60 billion in 2000. Every 23 seconds a traumatic brain injury occurs, and in the next year, an average of 1.4 million Americans will sustain a traumatic brain injury.

These statistics did not go unnoticed. Deborah Johnson, RN, CCM, Brain Injury Specialist, and founder of Careforward noticed the devastating effect catastrophic auto accidents had on the injured person and their family. Out of the need for a day of fun and celebration for these incredible people the Carnival of Care was born. A check to the Brain Injury Association of Michigan will be given out of the proceeds to protect our Auto No Fault Benefits in Michigan .

Johnson expects more than 500 survivors, family, and caregivers to attend the Carnival. "Life after a Traumatic Brain Injury is a big adjustment, not only for the survivor, but for their loved ones. The Carnival of Care is a day to celebrate the triumphs and achievements of our survivors and their loved ones, in a warm, fun and informational environment."

Carnival organizers are still seeking volunteers, raffle donations and vendors for this year's event. Register as attendee, volunteer or vendor online at www.carnivalofcare.com or call 248-423-3535.
