Cell Phone Theft Beneficial For Carriers

Online, May 31, 2013 (Newswire.com) - A month long survey reveals that 59% out of the total property crime committed in Tenderloin involves mobile device, and the majority of which were cell phone theft according to Tenderloin Police Chief Greg Suhr.
"And I can say routinely, in all areas, over 50% of our property crime is mobile devices," Suhr stated.
Cell phone theft has become the most colloquial crime of opportunity beyond the country.
Suhr also stated, "I've been shouting it from the highest mountains, what we need is a national registry by the cell phone providers so that when your phone is stolen you can immediately 'brick-it' and make it useless."
There have been existing calls of sort for this kind of action. Carriers should be able to embed disabling function, but those that have "bricking the phone" capability haven't made it undimmed to customers while others are hesitant on putting such features on their client's phone.
"They say it is too complicated," Suhr added. "But they say they can track phones, and they want us to track them, arrest thieves and put them into jail, when the same software could be used to 'brick' the phone."
The bricking technology is widely used in Australia and Suhr questioned why it isn't widespread. The only advantage that this crime provides is an opportunity for cell phone carriers and manufacturers to gain millions from replacement phones.
If a manufacturer of smartphones put in a "kill switch" manufacturers would still be hesitant to activate this. The stolen phone can be sold in the black market, while the victim will be looking for a new phone and often the majority will purchase the same brand of phone that was lost. It is a win-win proposition for manufactures and cell phone companies, but a big loss from the victims. Manufacturers and cell phone companies learn to turn their back while the said crime is growing and the authorities are left alone in formulating cell phone theft prevention.
