Chevy Volt Makes It To The Top 15 Percent Of All Alternative Energy Vehicles In The US Based On Sales
Online, August 24, 2012 (Newswire.com) - While the Chevy Volt has reached nowhere near the mainstream popularity of other vehicles like the Cruze, Malibu, or the Equinox, sales numbers for this plug-in hybrid are impressive nonetheless. Alternative energy vehicles normally only appeal to a much smaller, niche market of consumers who may not have the same needs for the vehicle they drive. Even diesel vehicles (excluding trucks), which have been around for a long time and are quite popular in European and International markets, have low sales numbers. The largest category in the alternative energy segment for passenger vehicles is actually the traditional hybrid. Comprising of vehicles like the Prius, the Camry Hybrid, the Chevy Malibu Hybrid, and others, this group is not too far behind traditional car sales.
The Chevy Volt, with its unique drivetrain that can operate on full-electric power for up to 38 miles before using a gasoline generator, is in a class that tends to appeal to a much smaller segment. This has not hindered the Volt though as it blows "normal" plug-in numbers out of the water. With sales reaching 1,680 units in May, 1,760 units in June, and an incredible 1,849 units in July, the Volt actually ranks 9th out of all alternative-energy vehicles sold in the U.S. And among the eight vehicles that outranked it, the Chevy Volt has the best positive momentum with about a 5.1 percent increase in sales for July.
Primary driving forces behind the increased sales of vehicles like the Chevy Volt include the constantly rising price of fuel and the trend of "going green" to help preserve the environment. With the cost of fueling a plug-in electric vehicle becoming so attractive, the slightly higher starting price can be easily justified. The Chevy Volt is also quite a well equipped ride, in addition to being less costly to own and drive. With plenty of head and leg room, rear bucket seats, optional heated leather seats, and a high-tech, futuristic instrumentation, the Volt feels like a high-end, luxury compact.
