Chicago Special Needs Dentist Attended Training On Treatment of Anxious & Special Needs Patients
Online, July 1, 2013 (Newswire.com) - Chicago special needs dentist Dr. Elseweifi of Bucktown Dental Associates attended advanced training on the dental care of anxious and special needs children and adults. Training was held by the Academy of General Dentistry in Nashville Tennessee. The training addressed behavioral management, sedation, and dental treatment technique. Bucktown Dental Associates serves a wide variety of special needs patients.
"Many dentists prefer not to treat special needs patients", said Dr. Elseweifi. Dentists often find it difficult to manage the several medical conditions those patients have and the multiple medications they use. Patients with special needs, especially those with neurodevelopmental disabilities, often require either in-office sedation, mechanical restrains, or treatment at hospitals. In addition, they usually need modifications of the routine dental procedures. Few dentists have the knowledge and skill to deal with these modifications.
For a dental office to treat special needs patients, it must be especially equipped to meet the specific needs of those patients. Treatment rooms should accommodate wheelchairs. The office should have mechanical restrains often needed for safe management of special needs patients. Staff should have specific training to use mechanical restrains and to monitor patients during treatment. Clinical staff should agree to take the extra time often needed to communicate with and treat patients with special needs.
Chicago special needs dentist Dr. Elseweifi spent three days of focused training in Nashville. In addition to clinical participation training, he refreshed his knowledge on the latest of medico-legal aspects of special needs dentistry. Training also included a review of the latest equipment and techniques of treatment.
