Chief of Staff of ESG2 to Present at Maritime Security Conference in Washington in January 2010

Capt. Mark Genung, Chief of Staff of the Expeditionary Strike Group Two (ESG2), to present at the Maritime Security & Anti-Piracy Conference (MSAPC) on January 13-15, 2010 in Washington, D.C.

New-Fields Exhibitions, organizers of the Maritime Security & Anti-Piracy Conference (MSAPC), announced today that Capt. Mark Genung, Chief of Staff of the Expeditionary Strike Group Two (ESG2), has confirmed to talk about the efforts of the United States in the global campaign against maritime piracy at the MSAPC, a three-day conference and workshop on January 13-15, 2010 in Washington, D.C.

The ESG2 is part of the US ESG, which is centered on the combat power of a combined amphibious readiness group and Marine Expeditionary Unit. It adds to the robust strike, anti-air, anti-surface and anti-subsurface capabilities of cruisers, destroyers, frigates and submarines. The essential characteristics of ESG are mobility, agility and lethality, which give the regional or combatant commander the flexibility to conduct operations across a broad spectrum of conflicts. Prior to his current post, Capt. Genung commanded USS VELLA GULF and deployed to the CENTCOM AOR in 2008-2009. While on deployment, VELLA GULF was the on-scene commander for the M/V FAINA Crisis, captured 16 suspected pirates who tried to seize two ships in the Gulf of Aden and served as the flagship for Task Force 151.

Capt. Genung also commanded USS KLAKRING and deployed to the eastern Pacific in support of the campaign on drugs and UNITAS. His shore duty assignments have included Junior Board Member on the Atlantic Fleet Nuclear Propulsion Examination Board and Action Officer on the Joint Staff J6. He joins other maritime industry leaders and decision-makers in the Naval Forces who will speak at MSAPC:

* Mark Hornung - Head, NATO Shipping Centre
* John Patch - Chief of the Acquisition Threat Support Division, Defense Intelligence Agency's Directorate for Analysis
* Tsietsi Mokhele - Chief Executive Officer, South African Maritime Safety Authority
* Duane Smith - Deputy Director of the Center for Maritime and Port Security, SRI International
* James Christodoulou - President and CEO, Industrial Shipping Enterprises Corp.
