Choose Healthy Foods for Antioxidants, Experts Urge

Natural foods-like fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, eggs and other quality proteins-contain an abundant variety of antioxidants and other ingredients we need for optimal health.

In 2005, a University of Scranton study concluded that coffee was the top source of antioxidants in the average American diet. Nothing else even came close; black tea placed second, but coffee beat it by almost 450%. Wine and beer also made the top 10.

"These findings might explain why we are in such terrible shape," say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new book TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and [url: http://turbocharged.us.com/the-turbocharged-mind/]The TurboCharged Mind[/url] (January 2012). "Research has shown that antioxidants are beneficial. Studies indicate coffee consumption may have health benefits, including reducing some types of cancer. However, not all sources of antioxidants are created equal, and we cannot live on antioxidants alone. Coffee, tea, wine and beer can be a part of healthy diet, but should not be the main source of antioxidants. These items are actually poor nutrition sources."

"Natural foods-like fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, eggs and other quality proteins-contain an abundant variety of antioxidants and other ingredients we need for optimal health," adds Dian. "These are what we should be consuming in greater quantities. Fruits such as dates, prunes, raisins, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, plums, oranges, red grapes and cherries are excellent. Vegetables such as kale, spinach, Brussels sprouts, alfalfa sprouts, broccoli flowers, beets, red bell peppers, onions, fresh corn, artichokes and eggplant are also good. Beans, particularly small red beans, have many benefits. Among nuts, pecans, walnuts, and hazelnuts are the winners. Honey, eggs, meat, fish and shellfish also contain antioxidants and other compounds that are best preserved by not overcooking. Ground cloves, cinnamon, and oregano are three top antioxidant-rich spices."

"Build your diet around natural and nutrient-rich foods," says Tom. "These are the foods that have allowed humans to thrive across the millennia. Strive to include as many of them in your daily diet as possible."
