ChronicDB Ready For Production

ChronicDB announces the first production version of its live database update system. This is the first time a technology makes it possible to apply live database schema changes without downtime, including updates of live database connections.

Pre-release versions of the technology were distributed to select system integrators preparing for deployment of live database updates through an early adoption program introduced earlier this year. After months of continuous product improvements, and taking into serious consideration user feedback, ChronicDB is ready to serve enterprise applications. Although the technology currently targets PostgreSQL on Linux, there are plans to support additional database management systems and operating systems.

A critical piece of updating a database live is the need to update the existing connections of client applications. These are established connections that are often in the midst of issuing a query as a prepared statement, or receiving results. ChronicDB transparently re-establishes such connections against the new version of a database without losing data. The client application maintains its connection and operates in a virtual environment that preserves the semantics of the old version of the database.

With this capability databases can be seamlessly moved within or across clouds according to the scalability demands of the applications.
