It had been eight years since Nigel's death. As each day passed since Jan's trip to London, he was now convinced an organized terrorist group was plotting to overthrow the South African's government. He made numerous inquiries for information on known anti apartheid organizers. Each led nowhere. Jan's refusal to discontinue his quest for the truth brought him a storm of ridicule from fellow colleagues. He continued to pester fellow workers, superiors, and other members of South African police in nearby cities, for more information to support his theory. However, Jan was concerned with rumors how members of the secret society called the Circle were financed.
"Proof is what I want, Captain Linden," shouted the Chief of detectives. Do you have any proof? Do you? What is the nature of this proof?"
Jan took a step backward. He coughed to clear his throat. "Chief, how can you turn your back on the truth?"
Ha, the truth is only useful if it's convenient to those seeking vengeance," smarted the Chief of Detectives.
Jan swallowed hard. He looked at the chief strode back and forth across the small wooden office floor. "Chief, I have reason to believe..."
"I don't give a damn what you believe; this mission of yours has to stop. For Christ sakes, you haven't come up with one thread of proof in four years."
"But what about Nigel's death, the way he was murdered," Jan insisted.
The Chief threw up his hands in the air. "Oh give me a break! A group of tribal chiefs gets together and a damn black's head ends up on a spear, and you think a conspiracy is brewing. Hell, many in this department feel the blacks are not intelligent enough to mount a successful organized campaign against each much less the government.
Jan ran a sweaty palm over his head to slick back his full-body red hair. He stared at the chief. "Sir, if this conspiracy ring have access to tremendous amounts of money, then my God, there's trouble ahead. The key to any rebellion is money and money is power. If properly used, and carefully placed in the hands of the right people, a successful revolt could be launched."
The chief shrugged his shoulders. "All right Linden, let's assume you're correct, then who are they? What do they want and where are they getting the money?"
