Compliance Implementation Services (CIS), a leading life sciences consulting firm, recently hosted an executive breakfast for BayBio member companies and other executives in the life sciences community. The symposium, "Know Your Options: Considering a "Virtual" Commercial Operation," featured a panel of industry experts from CIS, D2 Pharma Consulting and Dendreon who discussed the options available to emerging companies considering commercial operations.

The discussion focused on a commercialization model that emerging companies are using to successfully launch their products in the U.S. market. The group presented a timeline that introduced the specific components of commercialization as it relates to supply chain management, compliance programs, contract management and government programs participation. Based on a post-event survey, participants found discussions of the commercialization timeline and a case study on implementing the timeline to be of particular value to their organization. Approximately 80% of the audience stated they would make changes to their business decisions as a result of advice given in the program.

CIS designed the program to hone-in on the compliance concerns important to executives of emerging companies. Program Chair Chris Cobourn, Senior Vice President, Commercial Compliance at CIS, said, "In an hour and a half we were able to cover the full gambit of commercialization and compliance challenges and provide the audience with a focused message on what they need to know." Participant John Clouston, Account Manager at Accelrys, commented, "The session was a great introduction to a part of my customer's business that I don't normally see! I focus more on early R&D up to manufacturing. To see the work that has to happen from approval to the patient is additionally eye-opening. If only the public could appreciate the effort it takes to create those little white pills. Another audience member wrote, "The topic was one with which I was unfamiliar, but knew I needed to learn more about. It was one of those 'I don't know' what 'I don't know' content box that can destroy your project. The speakers did an excellent job of revealing the contents."

CIS is an active member of BayBio, Northern California's life science association, and collaborated with BayBio leadership to develop the program specifically for its membership. "We continually evaluate emerging trends and best practices in our industry and work with our members to provide programming that encourages learning from each others' experiences," said Scott Miller, BayBio Director of Programs. "CIS' program on commercialization was a great addition to our Life Science Series, and we thank them for helping to further our members' business goals."
