The City of Miami Mayor Tomas P. Regalado, Miss Earth Florida 2010 Kelly Saks and Miss Teen Earth Florida Brittney Ronda are joining efforts to raise awareness for Earth Hour.
Online, March 23, 2011 (Newswire.com) - No lights. No electricity. No problem. The City of Miami Mayor Tomas P. Regalado, Miss Earth Florida 2010 Kelly Saks and Miss Teen Earth Florida Brittney Ronda are joining efforts to raise awareness for Earth Hour. On Saturday, March 26, 2011 at 8:30p.m. Mayor Regalado and Ms. Saks will dim non-essential lighting at a famous Miami landmark at to acknowledge and celebrate the commitment Miami has to do more for our planet.
Mayor Regalado, Miss Saks and Miss Ronda are commissioning Floridians to partake in this voluntary event to raise awareness of sustainability issues. Participation can take place from the comfort of your own home; all that needs to be done is switching the light switch from on to off for at least 60 minutes.
Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia in 2007 and is organized annually by the World Wildlife Fund. More than two million individuals and two thousand businesses participated in the first ever Earth Hour by turning off their lights and taking a stand on climate change.
Since the first Earth Hour, the participation has grown from a single city to becoming the greatest environmental campaign in history with individuals, businesses and governments across 128 countries joining in. More than a 1,000 of the world's man-made marvels and natural wonders participated in Earth Hour 2010, including: the Pyramids in Egypt, Eiffel Tower, Empire State Building, Niagara Falls, Beijing's Forbidden City, Cape Town's Table Mountain, Sydney Opera House, Buckingham Palace and Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil.
The Bank of America Tower, the Freedom Tower and City Hall participated in Earth Hour 2010, by dimming their lights.
Earth Hour will also be the kick-off for Miss Saks and Miss Ronda's environmental awareness tour leading to Earth Day 2011, on April 22. Throughout the month of April, these "Green Beauties" will be making appearances at different eco-friendly events throughout the State of Florida and educating the community on greener and healthier ways of living and preserving natural resources.
