Classic Novel of Extra-Sensory Perception in War Re-Issued
Dream Baby, Bruce McAllister's classic novel of extra-sensory perception in war, is back in print. "A stunning tour de force--one of the most memorable chronicles of the Vietnam War" --Publishers Weekly.
Online, February 8, 2011 (Newswire.com) - Bruce McAllister's l989 novel Dream Baby, considered the classic novel of extra-sensory perception in war, has been re-issued.
Praised by reviewers and readers alike as both a riveting science fiction thriller and one of the finest chronicles of the Vietnam War, Dream Baby tells the story of a young Army nurse, Mary Damico, who dreams the deaths of soldiers before they happen, but cannot save them. Only when she is recruited for a unit of other "esp talents"--one run by a rogue Central Intelligence Agency psychiatrist who may be a "talent" himself--can she become the warrior she needs to be to stop the psychiatrist's insanity and save those she has come to love.
Dream Baby is based on fifteen years of research, interviews with two hundred veterans of three American wars who reported paranormal experiences that kept them alive, and actual classified contingency plans to end the war in Vietnam that have still not been made public.
Bruce McAllister is an American writer of science fiction and fantasy. His short stories have appeared in national magazines, literary quarterlies, "year's best" anthologies (including Best American Short Stories 2007, edited by Stephen King) and college textbooks. He is the author of two novels (Humanity Prime and the award-winning Dream Baby) and of the career-spanning short story collection The Girl Who Loved Animals and Other Stories. He lives in southern California.
The novel is available through www.dreambabynovel.com
and Amazon.com.
Reviews:
"A stunning tour de force.... Masterful interior monologues that yield eerie, tingling tension make this terrifying novel one of the most memorable chronicles of the Vietnam war."

--Publishers Weekly

"Dream Baby is simply good fiction, deriving power from traditional fictional sources: the heroism of the nurse's character, the tension of the situation... It is powerfully metaphoric... "

--New York Times Book Review

"...a gripping supernatural Vietnam war novel..."

--Los Angeles Times

"...superb writing...riveting, emotionally-charged first-person account that moves with adventure-tale speed."

--New York Newsday

"This book is so engrossing I devoured the first third of it in a noisy, crowded cafe. McAllister has an excellent ear for speech, a good grasp of description and emotion, and he can create research notes and memos that will chill you. 'Nam novel? Yeah. Good speculative fiction? Definitely."

--San Diego Tribune

"McAllister walks in the path of such celebrated novelists as Robert Stone, Tim O'Brien and Stephen Wright--but not in their shadow. Dream Baby reads like the truth."

--Lucius Shepard, Hugo- and Nebula-Award winner
"McAllister is a writer of immense talents and has produced a novel head and shoulders above the competition. Dream Baby may be the definitive Vietnam novel. It is certainly the best thing I've read in years."

--Harry Harrison, Grand Master Award, Science Fiction Writers of America
