Take Boecker for example. As an architect, he has focused exclusively on the design of high-performance green buildings since 1996. He serves as a green building consultant with project teams around the world helping them facilitate an integrative design process. During his workshop, "Integrative Design", he'll discus the key to cost-effective high-performance green buildings.
Based in Wellsville, PA, Boecker is a partner in 7group, a green building consulting firm. Along with his 7group partners, he co-authored The Integrative Design Guide to Green Building, a seminal book published by Wiley in 2009. He also authored the "LEED Services Profile" in the AIA Architect's Handbook for Professional Practice. His design work was recognized by over 40 design awards, including 25 Awards for Design Excellence from AIA, three Pennsylvania Governor's Awards for Environmental Excellence in 1998, 2001 & 2003, and selection by AIA for their nationwide COTE Top Ten Green Projects in 2000 and 2009. He was selected by the U.S. team to participate in the Green Building Challenge (GBC) as designer of three of ten projects nationwide selected to represent the U.S. at the Sustainable Building (SB) 2000 and 2002 conferences, held in Maastricht, The Netherlands and Oslo, Norway. He was part of the core group that led the U.S. Team's GBTool assessment work at SB 2008 in Melbourne and SB 2004 in Tokyo.
What does he hope people who attend his lecture will come away with?
"That high performance green and LEED projects do not need to cost more to build than conventional construction if project teams engage an integrative design process," Boecker answered. "Accordingly, we do not need to have any "payback" discussions."
Boecker added that the market demand for green buildings has increased dramatically.
"As a result a significant component of our economic recovery is tied to the green jobs associated with green buildings, not only due to the size of the design and construction industry's market sector, but also the manufacture of the myriad associated products and technologies," Boecker says. "Our "sustainability" work can move beyond simply "doing less damage" by first engaging a mindset shift that understands humans "as" nature, not separate from it; as such we can use the development of our built environment as an opportunity to improve and participate in the evolving health of each unique place."
