Cloud Computing Growth Expected To Increase Global Energy Efficiency Performance Through 2020

Predicted growth in cloud computing will have a significant and positive impact on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy sustainability.

With the majority of the world currently experiencing some level of declining economy, the global demand for cloud computing service continues to see consistent growth and expansion. According to a new report from Pike Research (Pike), a leading provider of market research on clean technology markets, cloud computing is projected to see annual revenues grow from 2009 totals of $46.0 billion to over $210.3 billion by 2015.

The research by Pike also concludes that the predicted growth in cloud computing will have a significant and positive impact on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy sustainability. Because of the continuing investments in energy efficient data center technologies, the cloud computing growth model is expected to deliver a 38% reduction in data center energy expenditures across the globe by 2020. The report also concludes that public cloud solutions will continue to lead the adoption of private clouds, due to the capital requirements and technology expertise required to achieve a similarly efficient cloud solution.

"There are many reasons that organizations look to the cloud for their technology needs, but achieving a greener energy solution is an end result that I am happy to participate in delivering, because everyone can share in that benefit." says Christopher Stark, Cetrom IT President and CEO. "Over the last couple of years, we have retired well over a thousand servers from the premises of new clients that migrated to our cloud computing platform. In addition, we make it a constant practice to evaluate our own power consumption totals against newer and more efficient hardware, to make improvements whenever possible."
