Common Core Mathematics Comes to Delaware
DE workshops on math content knowledge and Common Core math standards are an exemplar for training over 300 NY teachers.
Online, August 2, 2012 (Newswire.com) - Description: Elementary teachers representing four districts are participating in workshops focusing on math content knowledge and Common Core mathematics standards. In addition to sharpening teachers' understanding of math concepts and the Common Core, the workshops put a spotlight on effective ways to convey a deeper understanding of math to students. Working with Delaware Foundation for Science and Mathematics Education, officials from Common Core, Inc. expect that the Delaware experience will prepare them for their work with over 300 teacher-ambassadors in New York state.
Teachers from Appoquinimink, Brandywine, Christina, and Red Clay districts and Kuumba Academy are attending workshops that will help them become master teachers in elementary mathematics. Two weeklong workshops are giving teachers of grades K through 6 a deep understanding of the fundamental concepts that will enable them to take mathematics instruction to a higher level, giving their students the competence and confidence they need to meet the more rigorous Common Core Mathematics standards. National mathematics expert Dr. Scott Baldridge has been brought in by Delaware Foundation for Science and Mathematics Education (DFSME) in partnership with Common Core, Inc. The training is taking place this week and next at Wilmington University.
The Delaware exemplar is being filmed by Common Core, Inc. as they prepare for their work with over 300 teacher-ambassadors, from districts across the state of New York, who will in turn train thousands of New York teachers to help their students meet the Common Core Mathematics standards. The standards are informed by the top-performing states and countries around the world to give children in the U.S. a world-class education, readying them for college and careers. Common Core math standards have recently been adopted by 45 states. The DFSME program is a step toward ensuring that Delaware teachers are in the vanguard of those up to the challenges presented by the Common Core.
DFSME, a 501 (c) (3) charitable foundation, is a business-education-community-government partnership. For more information, go to www.dfsme.org.
