Design & Construction of Steel Composite Arch Bridge Using CFT :
THE ROYAL GOVERNMENT of Bhutan had planned to construct a city road in the heart of Thimpu called Hospital Link Road, which would ease the traffic congestion on the main road and establish a parallel corridor to the Secretariat complex. One of the major components of this road is the construction of a bridge across the Chubachu River running through the icturesque landscape of the Capital City. The terrain is hilly and the stream has high velocity of flow. After detailed site investigation and review of alternative schemes, an aesthetically pleasing open spandrel arch bridge with overall length of 48m has been planned and detailed
design prepared. The main ribs of the arch and verticals are of concrete filled tubes (CFT), which act as a steel - concrete composite element. The twolane deck is of RCC construction, composite with steel grillage deck system. Due to adoption of steel composite structure, both the project requirement of aesthetics with economy could be satisfied. The arch rib has been pre-fabricated in segments in workshop and transported to site on hilly road. All steel components of the bridge have been fabricated in workshop through full-strength welding and site assembled with High Strength Friction Grip (HSFG) bolts. The arch rib segments are erected by segmental cantilevering method supported by temporary steel on the arch foundation itself and stay cables systems of backstays and forestays.
Steel Intensive Construction :
THE GOVERNMENT IS ALL set to 16 quality standards for steel industry and a notification to this effect will be issued shortly, said Mr. R.S. Pandey while delivering his inaugural address at a workshop on Steel in Construction, and recently organized by Institute for Steel Development and Growth and Rashtiya Ispat Nigam Ltd, in Hyderabad. The government is very serious in implementing the standards and as a part of it asked the steel industry to adhere to these standards. The industry will be given six months time to comply with all these standards. The main objective of introducing these standards is to ensure that consumers across the country should have access to only standardized quality steel.Steel is a major driver of growth of the country's economy. In order to keep pace with the rapid advancement of modern era professionals and technologists all over the country have been designing cost effective steel structures. The recently held workshop on Steel in Construction focused to develop better understanding among the steel suppliers and users regarding latest development involving innovative application of construction techniques, use of advanced development in materials.
