Cornerstone SMR, Inc. has signed a ten year agreement that will allow Fleming-Mason Energy to utilize our 220 MHz spectrum for the purpose of implementing a smart grid solution to its utility customers. The lease covers 8 counties and nearly 100,000 people. Once constructed the system will allow Fleming-Mason Energy to automatically receive and transmit data from utility customer meters on a real time basis. The utility will also achieve significant cost savings through avoided use of manpower otherwise needed to collect meter readings and to manually switch customer equipment on and off.

There are many benefits to "smart grid technology". The new "smart grid meters" will allow better quality control of voltage and will automatically report an outage in real time. In addition, as utility customers look for ways to save money, "direct load control" becomes important. "Direct load control" allows a utility to switch customer equipment on and off during peak hours with the permission of the customer. This saves money for both the customer and the utility. The ability to control demand from, say, air conditioners, saves the utility the future need to construct additional generating and distribution capacity.

Starting with the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, the Federal Government is looking for more and more ways to move the United States toward greater energy independence and security. Smart grid technology is one of the key components in making that happen, as energy efficiency becomes paramount. This company is the latest in a growing number of utility companies that have entered into lease agreements with Cornerstone SMR. "There are thousands of utility co-ops in the United States. Among these are electric, natural gas, water and other types of utilities. All of them are moving to smart grid technology as a way to be more fiscally and energy efficient. In addition to our regular customer subscriber business, our efforts to promote our spare spectrum for use by utilities benefit the utility co-ops and our shareholders. Spectrum leasing is an important part of our business strategy. As a major holder of 220 MHz spectrum in the United States, our company has a great opportunity to serve many businesses. We will continue to pursue this business model to grow our revenues wherever we have spectrum," says Mark Duff, the President of Cornerstone SMR, Inc.
