Creative FX Chrome Old Banger for Fifth Gear

Vehicle wrapping specialist, Creative FX, demonstrate the latest in car design trends when 'chroming' a 1994 Rover Metro Tahiti for Channel 5 TV programme, Fifth Gear.

In the Fifth Gear episode, aired on Friday 28th October, presenter, Jonny Smith, investigated the current design trend that is taking the car world by storm -vinyl wrapping. Deemed the "biggest car phenomenon of the 21st Century", vinyl wrapping involves transforming the look of your vehicle by covering the paintwork in a specially manufactured vinyl film -one which can be removed at any time to return the vehicle to its original form.

Jonny opens the feature, "The idea is to create a finish that wouldn't be possible with paint; from stripes, to matt black and even chrome. The trend started with the mega rich but now even manufacturers are getting on to it." Inspired by the Audi R8's that Creative FX chrome wrapped for Elton John, Jonny decides to take it a step further and combine chrome with the other biggest design trend -carbon fibre.

It took the vehicle wrapping specialists less than a day to transform the car, but Jonny admits it's not as easy as Creative FX make it look. "It's convinced me this is not a DIY job; not on your nelly. It's very easy to get it wrong and there's a very fine line between good and crap, especially with chrome.

"What came across was the attention to detail. I've seen some vinyl wrapping before but never a full wrap. I was blown away by the professionalism. These guys are used to wrapping the top marques but even though this car was a bit of a laugh, it didn't stop their dedication to the job and they made it absolutely as good as it can be." Jonny's opinion comes across in the programme too, with his reaction to the finished result, "That looks remarkably good -doesn't it! I've created something spell binding."

Sean Davis, Director at Creative FX, agrees, "It'd be a great car to have - it might not be to everyone's taste, but it'll certainly make you stand out from the crowd!" The car was placed on auction site eBay after it had been wrapped and sold for £440.

"I'm really interested to know what the next big thing will be," says Jonny. "We've had matt black, carbon fibre and chrome; what's next? I'd like to have a wood effect wrap; people would really notice that," he concludes.
