When engine maker Cubewano won a multi-million pound defence contract with the US military to develop a revolutionary new engine, the firm drafted in Intelligence Works to provide a robust, dependable and secure IT infrastructure.

Cubewano expanded its team of design engineers quickly after winning the contract, so needed an entire new system to support the new members of staff - from server down to workstations. It needed to be scalable to cope with further expansion as well as defence-grade security to track and protect the Intellectual Property being developed.

Intelligence Works implemented a bespoke document and records management system based on Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 and Microsoft Project 2010, which allowed employees to securely share files with suppliers whilst tracking the progress of various development projects. With Cubewano's management often visiting customers abroad, Intelligence Works implemented a Hyper-V and Remote Desktop Services solution which mean they could collaborate with colleagues - no matter where they were in the world.

Craig Fletcher, managing director of Cubewano, said: "We run a design department which has to meet deadlines reliably and effectively, so it was essential that our IT infrastructure supported this and didn't hinder our designers with performance problems. Intelligence Works recognised this and created a system for us that is reliable, flexible and fast - helping us to increase productivity.

"Working in both the military and aerospace sectors requires an incredibly demanding IT security system to ensure proprietary information is kept track of and protected. Intelligence Works helped us achieve a system which complies with complex security requirements such as the US government's International Traffic in Arms Regulations, but did so without compromising day-to-day usability or performance in our system."

Andrew Burtenshaw, director of Intelligence Works, commented: "We work in genuine partnership with our clients, investing time and effort to understand their business objectives and how our IT solutions can support them in achieving these. We really get under the skin of an organisation to recommend a whole system that will work intuitively, and are always on hand to help should things go wrong.

"Cubewano wanted systems in place to support demanding business functions, which were critical to making its engines fly. We designed, implemented and supported class leading collaboration, CAD and document management systems to ensure the success of the company's project."

Based in the heart of the Midland's technology community at Birmingham Science Park Aston, Intelligence Works provides bespoke and off-the-shelf IT solutions to a variety of SMEs and public sector and third sector organisations. The company is a Dell Registered Partner and a Microsoft Partner.
