Daily Dose Of Aspirin Significantly Reduces Cancer Risk, Suggests Study.

A study has suggested that a small daily dose of aspirin reduces the risk of dying of certain common cancers.

The research, undertaken at the University of Oxford and published in the medical journal Lancet, involved 25,000 patients. Over the average trial period of four years, patients given aspirin we found to have a 25% lower risk of death from cancer compared to patients who were not given the drug. The study also showed that the protective effect continued for 20 years, reducing the overall risk of cancer death by 20% in both sexes.

Broken down into individual cancers, the findings show a 60% reduction for oesophageal cancer, a 40% reduction for bowel cancer, 30% reduction for lung cancer and 10% charge for prostate cancer. Unfortunately, not enough women took part in the trials to gather sufficient date on breast or ovarian cancer.

While these results sound extremely promising, some experts have urged caution as aspirin increases the risks of stomach and gut bleeds, while others are keen to state that these results were found using a low dose (75mg) of aspirin and that there appears to be no benefit to taking more than this amount daily.

"Aspirin has already been shown to cut the risk of heart attack and stroke in people at increased risk and these latest findings are very promising", said Jon Welsman, manager of Express Chemist online UK Pharmacy. "It will take some time for scientists to digest the study results fully, so we strongly recommend that anyone interested in taking aspirin on a daily basis should talk to their GP first". He also stressed that "people should not think of aspirin as a replacement for a healthy lifestyle and should continue to make positive changes, such as giving up smoking and exercising regularly."
