Daipi Encourages Companies to Adopt "Work-life Strategy"

Ministry of Manpower Secretary Hawazi Daipi said that companies have to provide their employees with opportunities to balance their work and personal life in an effort to raise productivity and keep and retain talents.

Ministry of Manpower Secretary Hawazi Daipi said that companies have to provide their employees with opportunities to balance their work and personal life in an effort to raise productivity and keep and retain talents.

In his speech at a conference titled "Work-Life Strategy for Higher Productivity and Better Quality of Life", Daipi said that the increasing competition for valued employees is a challenge for companies especially when the global economy is slowly recovering from recession.

The official cited a recent study conducted by Hudson showing that three out of five employers "are willing to give salary raise to employees who plan to resign and seek higher paying job."

While Daipi said that offering higher salaries might work for some employers, he said that this may not be "an effective long-term strategy to keep talents from resigning and seeking other employment opportunities."

"It is not an effective solution since employees who stay just because of the high pay will most likely leave their present company if they are offered with a higher salary by another employer", Daipi added.

Daipi said that most employees nowadays are looking "at the overall package and not just on the pay" and added that "companies should find more aggressive ways to retain their key employees and talent."

The minister of labor department cited a study conducted by StrategiCom and the Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF) showing that majority of the graduating students were found to give importance on the long-term career viability, attractive overall compensation, and work-life balance in terms of employment.

With this finding, Daipi has encouraged employers from implementing work-life strategies that would fit in with the lives of their workers and talents.

"From any employee's perspective, a better work-life harmony means less tension from their personal and work lives and better quality of life which will result to higher work productivity", Daipi added.

Because the workforce today is "tech-savvy, diverse, and mobile," the official said that it is important for companies to adapt to such changes in order to enjoy higher productivity.

Meanwhile, Daipi admitted that many employers and HR managers are still hesitant to implement the "work-life strategy" due to lack of awareness. With this, the official encouraged them to read the labor department's new handbook titled "Energizing Work Culture" which focuses on the various needs of different demographic groups and how to meet their needs.
