Darlington Writes Noir for Chicks

Online, August 27, 2011 (Newswire.com) - Author Marguerite Darlington loves hard-boiled detective stories, but she's also been known to watch "Sex in the City." Her first novel, Movie Star Money, is a fast-paced murder mystery with an unapologetically female sleuth. The book serves up crime, romance and intrigue from a sexy, independent young woman's perspective.

Darlington wanted to create a character who could read people in a whole new way. "Sacha Sanchez grew up in a neighborhood candle shop," the author said. "Her father was the local witch doctor, but he wasn't really religious. He was just making a living, creating a piece of theater. He taught her how to read people at an early age and tell them exactly what they wanted to hear."

Sacha gets busted working a con in Chicago, so her poppa ships her off to Los Angeles where she starts running a new scam, calling herself an "energy healer." Before she knows it, she's the toast of Hollywood, until she finds one of her rich and famous clients dead, his wife crouched over him, covered in blood swearing up and down that she didn't do it.

Darlington chose to place her con-artist sleuth in the new age community to raise some subtle questions about the existence of the supernatural. "People are so conditioned to take religious beliefs on blind faith that it seemed like an ideal community for a con artist. On some level, people need religion. They want to believe in something. There are people out there who will take advantage of that, just like there are people out there who deeply believe in what they are doing and perhaps even have powers beyond the range of normal."

Marguerite has worked as a professional writer and editor for the last 15 years. Movie Star Money is her first novel. She lives in Los Angeles, California, with her husband Joshua and their little friends.
