RAE and ATC Announce Data Pedigree Management Patent!
Vienna, VA, - The vast amount of data available on the internet challenges users to sort factual information from unsubstantiated data. Internet users also need the ability to distinguish spear phishing attacks from legitimate messages, discern authoritative sources on the Internet and social networking sites, and develop confidence in the varied sources of information. Pedigree management solutions were developed to assist users in managing this flood of information by providing context and background into the sources of information in the form of meta-information.
Pedigree management solutions enable the user to work with other content generation and management systems to track each piece of data and artifact. This tracking capability leverages the following types of meta-information:
• Identity - What is it? Who sent it?
• Context - What is this data about?
• Location - where is it coming from?
• Provenance - who created this, when was it created, where was it created, and who has modified it since?
Leveraging this pedigree meta-information by filters can help reduce an overwhelming amount of data to a manageable and actionable stream. In addition, this meta-information serves as minable data that can be analyzed retrospectively over time to understand how events unfolded.
PMAF (Pedigree Management Assessment Framework) is an industry leading pedigree management technology solution, developed in collaboration between ATC-NY and RAE. PMAF allows users to have a scalable solution to managing and analyzing data pedigree.
PMAF recently reached an important milestone - ATC-NY (the technology partner of RAE) has just been issued US Patent #7,908,281 B2 that solidifies PMAF's position as a leading pedigree solution. RAE's CEO Pamela Goodrich says "The issuance of the PMAF patent recognizes the pedigree technology leadership provided by RAE, ATC-NY and our solutions partners like General Dynamics."
General Dynamics C4 Systems is currently one of a number of companies currently using PMAF's capabilities for information management offerings to government clients where pedigree of information is a key concern for analysts and decision-makers.
Ken Thurber, CTO of RAE, says today's CIO leaders need to recognize the tides of technological change and begin the roll out of this advanced COTS (Commercial Off the Shelf) technology that is available now.
PMAF provides the first scalable solution to the pedigree problem by separating the pedigree and information into two parts that can be processed separately. This allows the user community to see the details of information pedigree as it is enhanced based upon the chain of custody and further allows for confidence and reputation measures of the data to be developed.
Thurber says large scale installation and roll out of pedigree technology are needed to provide analysts the ability to understand where the information they are relying upon came from and what its real quality is. "If we don't boldly embrace information pedigree, we will embrace the inevitable next intelligence failure."
