Day of Learning, Art, and Action

University of Washington School of Social Work to Hold Teach-In Open to the Public

The University of Washington's School of Social Work will host a free half-day teach-in titled "A Day of Learning and Action: The 99% Arise" and it is open to the public on Friday, February 24th. Panelists and speakers from a variety of disciplines, cultures, and ages, will share knowledge and inspiration to bridge the divide between theory and practice, with topics including: labor organizing, civil rights actions, dynamics of marginalized citizens within a movement, and the roots of in-the-streets social work. Graduate student, Virginia Eader, is on the organizing committee of the teach-in: "We talk about working for social and economic justice in class and this is going to give students a practical understanding of what advocacy, activism, and practice, really look like. I am excited about the opportunity to be able to learn from such a dynamic cross-section of Seattle's active community."

The teach-in will run from 12:00 to 6:00 PM on February 24th, and will include multi-media, art, discussions, and panels on everything from the inequity of the economic engine and the historical roots of radical social work to legislative advocacy and the experiences of Seattle's activists and occupiers from the 1970s through today. Speakers include:
- Naomi Tutu, founder of the Tutu Foundation for Development and Relief in Southern Africa, author, and lecturer
- John Burbank, Executive Director of the Economic Opportunity Institute
- Larry Gossett, King County Councilmember and Council Chair
- Cindy Domingo, Co-Director of the US Women & Cuba Collaboration
- Nancy Amidei, Director of the Civic Engagement Project
- Bob Santos, activist and author
- Lynne Dodson, Washington State Labor Council Secretary-Treasurer
- Sarah van Gelder, Executive Editor of Yes! Magazine.
There is no charge to participate in the teach-in, which is open to the public. "I feel like the catalyst for something amazing has surfaced, and hope this teach-in will give me the tools I need to bring my passion out of the classroom and into action," commented David Delgado, graduate student.
