And what if the germ that caused the infection wasn't some rare deadly disease or some complication of a known killer like HIV, but simple, ordinary "staph" - the same germ millions have on their skin every day?

And what if nothing worked to treat it and stop it from coming back again and again - deadlier and deadlier?

Originally trained as a journalist, Dave Dumanis did the natural thing for him. He wrote a memoir.

"A Plague of Boils" (Slavin, Joseph, and Sons, 2012) is a short but powerful rumination on an affliction most people associate with the Middle Ages and biblical times more than the present day. Dumanis discusses his acquisition of subcutaneous hidradenitis; its misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis by half a dozen medical professionals; the monster-movie horror of the care process, strangely unchanged for hundreds of years except for sanitary measures; the near-uselessness of antibiotics; how his skin disorder (often obvious on his neck or face!) affected his relationship with his family, his work, and life itself; how bacteria are, in many ways, smarter than humans, right down to their unorthodox reproductive methods; and how he finally found a way to live normally, albeit with a radically different mindset.

Upon release, "A Plague of Boils" hit instantly #5 on Amazon.com's Skin Ailments chart. It will downloadable for Kindle at no cost on Thursday, May 17th and Friday, May 18th only.

An author of novels like "Cream" and "The Soft Pink and White Bunnyrabbit Story" as well as nonfiction, Dave Dumanis has supported himself for much of his working life as an advertising creative director. He has also worked as a cab driver, muffin baker, barista, salesperson, office assistant, and Hollywood television extra. Now 49, he lives in San Francisco with his wife and daughter.
