Abigail Tan, Heroine of the Zombie Genre
"Zombie Fever: Malaysia Outbreak" could be the break-out indie novel that captures the young adult audience longing for a new heroine to battle against the undead. The 283-page novel is the first in a series about the adventures of Abigail Tan, the Singaporean heroine, versus the zombie fever menace. In this first book, Abigail is cast in a reality TV show competing in Singapore and Malaysia. However, Malaysia has recently fallen victim to a zombie fever outbreak. While filming the show, Abigail fends off zombies, gets briefly abducted, is given an experimental vaccination and drawn into an international conspiracy, all while chasing a million dollar prize.
Local Flavor, Worldwide Appeal
Capturing an honest sense of the locales in Malaysia and Singapore was a central goal of B.M. Hodges. Hodges gives loving attention to geographic and cultural details of the two countries in the novel. While admittedly taking some literary license with those details, Hodges clearly wanted to show his passion for the region. "South East Asia is my home and I wanted to present the region as I see it: exciting, modern, a place for adventure and full of unique, interesting people," Hodges said.
