Dice Age, The New Era Of Dice On Kickstarter
A french game inventor in Los Angeles will launch this fall his creative dice line, called "Dice Age™", via the kickstarter innovation platform.
Online, June 7, 2011 (Newswire.com) - Tristan Convert, a french game inventor settled in Los Angeles is about to revolutionize the world of gaming dice this fall, by launching his creative dice line, called "Dice Age™", via the kickstarter innovation platform. The project must gather $10000 in pledges before the 20th of june.
For centuries dice have been those bone white blocks with black dots thrown into boardgames. Over the last 15 years there has been an explosion of those soccer shaped ones used in your Dungeons & Dragons® game. But no one has really reinvented dice at all. Well that changes with Dice Age™.
Although he lives in Los angeles, Tristan Convert was born in Lille, France. He grew among games like the go, diplomacy® or cosmic encounter®. His father was one of the first french Dungeons & Dragons® players. The advent of polyhedral dice with 4, 8 or 12 sides, as opposed to the classical six sided dice as we know it, fascinated him as a child, and this sparked off his new generation dice.
He created his first die as a piece of art, in 1997, in Lille, France, as he was looking for a sculpture with no bottom side. To him, the Venus de Milo statue can only stand on its base, and as an artist, he was wandering what would be a statue with no upper side. He found the answer with his first artistic die. He then invented several dice, and the gaming rules that would bind them together.
When he first took his set of rollable, playable pieces of art at the campus cafeteria, everybody would wonder what it was about and wanted a copy.
That's how he created molds, and the first 600 dice were cast by hand in his garage.
Dice Age dice are very peculiar, with abstract or figurative shapes like barrels, castles or dragons, and with special rules to play the game. It is a mix between Magic the Gathering® and Uno®, but is doesn't really refer to anything existing.
The players are embodying gods that compete for the Crown of gods, and therefore, they roll dice that represent divine creations, bearing numbers and symbols. The yellow dice embody the power of light, the orange, the power of warfare, and the green the force of life.
The game is divided in rounds. On his turn, a player chooses a die and rolls it. One rule only will determine the end of the round: never overshoot the last number rolled, or you lose all the dice you player in the round.
Symbols add spice to the course of the game by having an effect on the game, for example skipping a player's turn.
But the dice can also be used for other games, like the totem game, where you pile up dice, or the bonide game, using tokens.
This project is online on kickstarter.com under the name "Dice Age™, the new era of dice." The random 10 different dice set is only $25 or 5 dice for $15, which if you get a friend to do the same will give you each enough to play against each other. Even for people who just like the shapes can get in on the action with a $7 pledge to get two random dice when they are available. There are also plans for another 100 original dice that if the project is a hit will be released over the years to come expanding the game.
