Directional Technologies Discuss Scope Of Their Horizontal Remediation Wells System
Online, July 26, 2011 (Newswire.com) - Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) from ground water can be extracted through three techniques; vertical wells, horizontal wells, and horizontal trenches. horizontal wells are a better option when compared to the other two as they can affect a greater radius of the impacted area. Leaders in installing them since 1984, Directional Technologies discuss about the benefits of these wells.
"Besides removing harmful liquid and vapor inside the earth, the system is also used to introduce air and other eco friendly materials. These wells can be installed with the least harm to the earth's surface. And that's the reason why these are installed below railroads. But projects like these present their own challenges. For example, in The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Morris Park Yard project, the challenge was to install the horizontal wells ( http://www.directionaltech.com ), without disrupting the busy rail yard. The LIPR had decided to tackle the hydrocarbons through the in situ bioremediation method."
"We installed borings beneath several busy railroad tracks where locomotives were fueled and serviced. The bore paths were installed carefully to avoid underground water, sewer, power, communications, and gas lines at depths that were very close to the bore paths. The drilling schedule was closely coordinated with railroad operational schedules, allowing locomotive engine repair and refueling," says the spokesperson for DTI.
Horizontal wells can also be installed to extract soil vapor. A project with the JFK Airport involved an environmental consultant to install horizontal remediation wells in challenging site conditions.
Vapor Intrusion can be a major concern in places where soil and groundwater is contaminated with Volatile Organic Compounds. Examples for these include manufacturing and chemical processing plants, ware houses, landfills, coal gasification plants, train yards, dry cleaners, gas stations, petroleum refineries and terminal facilities.
These vapors can be mitigated by depressurizing the slab, extracting the vapors and maintaining negative pressure to ensure that the vapors migrating under the slab are captured and removed before they enter the structure. When large structures are involved, conventional installation technologies fail as they cause large scale inconvenience. Installing horizontal wells can on the other hand carry out the process with the least disturbance to the place.
The system has always been effective in environmental remediation applications.
