DirectRooms.com - People All Over Egypt Celebrate Victory Day on 23 December 2010

DirectRooms.com reports that Egyptians in Sharm el-Sheikh and all around the country will be coming together to hold celebrations for Victory Day towards the end of December

The public holiday commemorates the Suez Crisis, a war fought by Egypt against France, Britain and Israel in 1956. The war was a result of Egypt wanting to nationalize the Suez Canal while both France and Britain wanted control of the canal for its strategic position to transport oil. Israel's motivations were to reopen the Straits of Tiran for shipping.

Although the three countries were successful from a military perspective the political view was different, with international criticism of the attack and increasing pressure to maintain peace. Due to mounting pressure from the US and other countries the three nations were forced to withdraw by 22nd December 1956.

Egyptians now celebrate 23rd December with a national holiday and people around the country will be taking the time off to spend it with friends and family. Residents of Sharm el-Sheikh will be holding special celebrations as the city was used as a naval base by the Egyptians and was consequently captured by the Israelis during the crisis.

Visitors to the city staying in a hotel Sharm El Sheikh can travel to the numerous bars, restaurants and nightclubs which will be celebrating the national holiday.

Lek Boonlert, marketing head at DirectRooms.com commented: "The Suez crisis is remembered by people across the country and Sharm el-Sheikh will see more visitors as residents head down to the coast for the holiday. Extra visitors results in greater demand for hotels so people should make reservations early over the holiday period."
