DirectRooms - Yangon Union Day Will Be Held on 12 February 2011

DirectRooms.com introduces Union Day in Yangon. The public holiday will take place on 12th February 2011.

Union Day is no mere public holiday in Myanmar. The annual event celebrates the 12th February 1947 Panglong Agreement, which pronounced the nation's independence and led to the establishment of its centralised system of government. Formerly, the nation was a British colony, but after the agreement it officially became the Union of Burma (a name that was later changed to the Union of Myanmar).

A hotel in Rangoon will allow travellers to take part in the modern day version of the holiday. Today, the celebration in Yangon attracts more than 7,000 revellers from several ethnic groups throughout the nation.

In modern years, the day has become a festive celebration. One of the highlights is the many dances that go on. The Chin is a traditional bamboo dance often performed on Union Day. The dance places performers in a checkerboard of bamboo sticks that they must skip over as they dance.

In the past, the celebration brought children free from school out into the streets to wave flags. Though the festivity has sobered over time, there will still be parades and speeches and other activities going on during the day.

Hotels located in the city will put visitors in the heart of the celebration. Beyond this holiday, though, there is plenty to see and do in Rangoon. Hotels there are located near attractions like the sprawling Bogyoke Aung San Market and the stunning Shwedagon Pagoda.
