Dispelling Affordable Care Act Myths at Tawkers.com
Online, November 6, 2013 (Newswire.com) - The Affordable Care Act has seen some rough news coverage over its short lifetime, but most especially so since the launch of healthcare.gov. As traditional news outlets strive for more and more entertaining ways to present information, sometimes useful and necessary information can be left by the wayside. How does one sign up for the ACA, affectionately (and not-so-affectionately) known as Obamacare? What are the real costs to the poor, the underemployed, and business owners? Somehow, that information has been lost, as far as the average viewer is concerned.
Filling that informational gap is Tawkers.com, a new public chat application that aims to be a home for meaningful conversation on the web. The format is dominated by two Hosts, in this case writer and activist Katie Kablusich and DC In Person Assistant, and advocate in her own right, Heather Parker. While these two well-informed and experienced guides will form the main part of the discussion, the interested and curious can ask questions and make comments in a progressive open forum format. Comments deemed particularly relevant or insightful by the forum viewers can be highlighted for the Hosts. They can, in turn, spotlight comments to share and answer, integrating the discussion to include the audience.
The online discussion, called a Tawk, will be held on November 7th, at 4PM Pacific time. The title of the Tawk is "Navigating Obamacare Misconceptions." While both hosts are intensely passionate social justice activists and crusaders, Parker in particular is in possession of a great deal of expertise. While she is a writer and, in her own words, sometimes [an] attorney, she has a wealth of experience in women's health concerns. She is also working as an Assistant for DC Health Link, on one of the much-reported-upon health care exchanges. There is a lot of hands-on knowledge as to how these exchanges work, as well as plenty of access to policy information.
The co-host is a Resident Tawker, meaning that she is an official part of the Tawkers.com community. Kablusich has been involved in several Tawks already on the fledgling platform. Her other credentials remain impressive; she's published on several sites, such as Raging Chicken Press and Illinois Magazine. She has previously led a Tawk on women's health.
The directed-but-open nature of these online discussions should prove an interesting educational proving ground. Users can only see the comments of people they follow, so this Tawk may lack some of the vitriol famous to this particular topic. This Tawk, and discussions like it, may just be the fresh air and sunlight this festering sore of an argument needs.
