DIY Dentistry? Experts at Orange County Dental Care Say Leave It to the Pros
A recent report discusses the emerging and dangerous practice of DIY dentistry. Dr. Ali-Reza Etemadieh of Orange County Dental Care cautions consumers against this alarming trend.
Orange, CA, March 10, 2015 (Newswire.com) - A recent ABC News report unveiled a new and startling trend that is finding momentum in certain areas of the United States—that of Do-It-Yourself Dentistry. What has long been a field of medical care that has been left to the trusted hands of seasoned and educated professionals has now found a footing—albeit a shaky one—amongst members of the population who are looking to engage in cosmetic dentistry without the help of a dental professional. Made aware of this troubling occurrence, Dr. Ali-Reza Etemadieh, DDS, an Orange County dentist based in California, cautions against this trend—and advises his patients as well as the general population to not buy into this DIY scheme.
“There is a reason that the dental profession exists, and it is to help people ensure their overall oral health. This also relates to the implementation of factors involved in cosmetic dentistry,” states Dr. Etemadieh. “Taking a DIY approach by buying something you find on the Internet to change the appearance of your teeth can cause more harm than good.”
Dr. Etemadieh refers to the fact that Internet consumers can now by tooth bands online. These are small rubber bands that are slid around teeth in order to close gaps. Concerned by an ABC News report that highlighted the experience of a young woman named Jamila Garza, who bought cheap tooth bands online before deciding to switch over to using even cheaper hair elastics on her teeth, Dr. Etemadieh states that Ms. Garza’s approach is not only unsafe, but can cause long-term oral health problems.
“The fact of the matter is that when you try to implement changes to the appearance of the teeth through non-scientific or medical means, it’s likely that any change you experience is going to be temporary at best,” notes Dr. Etemadiah, a professional who practices dentistry in Orange County, California.
Dr. Ali-Reza Etemadieh, DDS, advises that as it relates to closing gaps between teeth, a dental professional should be consulted to ensure that proper overall health is maintained, both in the short- and long-term.
“When you take a DIY approach to closing a gap, you are unfortunately overlooking several things—primarily, why is the gap occurring in the first place?” says Dr. Etemadieh. “A space
might be present because of missing or even extra teeth. Or it could be there because of an entirely different reason. If a person decides simply to take care of it on their own, they are engaging in oral modification without a proper diagnosis or x-rays. This can lead to gum disease, root problems, and pain.”
Dr. Etemadieh encourages, “I realize that people often will look to a DIY solution because of cost. However, remember, when it comes to your health, trying to do something that should be left to someone who has an education in oral medicine can generate more expenses in the long term. Consult with a trusted dentist about all of your options. The bottom line is DIY dentistry is dangerous. Leave it to the experts.”
