A fax machine is an electronic instrument composed of a scanner, a modem, and a printer. It transmits data in the form of pulses via a telephone line to a recipient, usually another fax machine, which then transforms these pulses into images, and prints them on paper.

The software is used to send an unlimited number of faxes from an iPhone for free. Users can take photographs from the phone's
built-in camera and attach the images to a fax. Pictures already in the photo library can also be attached to faxes.

While the needs of computer-to-fax communications are well covered, the simplicity of quickly faxing a handwritten document combined with the advantages of email are not.

"iFax" (T.37) was designed for fax machines to directly communicate via email. Faxes are sent as e-mail attachments in a TIFF-F format.

Faxes take quite some time to send through the iFax service--about 20 to 30 minutes--but the service worked reliably in tests. Also, iFax doesn't do anything other than help to compose and send a fax. There are no features for storing faxed documents, cleaning up an image by making it sharper or brighter--e.g., making a signed contract photographed look more legible--or even keeping track of fax numbers, although add a number from iPhone contacts.

Notice one goofy limitation. To reduce fax spam, only send one fax to the same number every six hours. If deal with a lot of contracts, and need to fax back to the office frequently, then iFax might not be the tool. Also, mention that fax quality is highly dependent on the quality of the iPhone photo. Usually, documents look clear--although in some cases text looked a bit chunky and pages looked too dark. Some users have reported problems sending faxes--iFax worked well for the US numbers.
