Dr. Brian Harley Discusses Plantar Fasciitis with Insurance Professionals

Dr. Brian Harley, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon with Village Podiatry Centers, was featured as the guest speaker for the Atlanta Claims Association's (ACA) spring luncheon. The event, held at Maggiano's in Smyrna, was attended by 60 members and guests of the ACA.

The audience of insurance professionals learned about plantar fasciitis, a condition that causes pain and inflammation of a thick band of tissue, called the plantar fascia, which runs across the bottom of the foot. Affecting up to two million Americans annually, plantar fasciitis is the most common source of heel pain. Typical symptoms are recurring pain below the heel and morning tightness and pain with the first steps.

Dr. Harley, who treats patients at Village Podiatry's Smyrna and Duluth locations, encouraged audience members to exercise preventive measures, such as wearing properly fitted shoes appropriate for the specific activity and orthotic inserts for support. He advised that plantar fasciitis can be treated with conservative measures including stretching exercises, night splints and injections. However, if a painful condition persists after exhausting noninvasive treatment, surgery may be necessary.

"There are a number of surgical treatments available to partially or totally release the fascia. I discuss each of these with my patients to choose the best option," said Dr. Harley. "People suffering with heel pain need to be evaluated by a podiatrist because relief is available through treatment or surgery."
