"There are newer medications and the goal is to try and select those that are most complementary. It's not like a stew where you can throw everything together. It's more like a chef putting together a soufflé. You really only want to combine treatment and medication options that are complementary and in the best interest of the patient. But there are many considerations because the patients are often taking other medications or have other health conditions."
Edward N. Burney M.D., FAAO, FACS, Director of The Anterior Segment Services, University Hospitals of Cleveland
With over 25 years dedicated to medicine, Dr. Burney brings a wealth of knowledge to his industry, and in particular, to his area of expertise, ophthalmology. When asked why he decided upon this particular specialization, Dr. Burney said:
"I have always enjoyed working with my hands and I have always been a hands-on kind of person. But it was not until my Ophthalmology clerkship that I truly felt at home. The doctor-patient relationship was great, and the doctors really seemed to enjoy their work. It was a great mixture of both medical and surgical care."
As a thought-leader in his field, Dr. Burney is keenly aware of recent trends in Glaucoma. In particular, he notes the acute increase in the number of patients diagnosed with the disease. He attributes this rise to increased patient awareness, and increased population longevity, along with more sensitive and advanced detection methods. Burney also notes that fortunately many new treatment options have become available in recent years, but challenges still remain. He noted:
