"When it comes to prostate cancer, it's not necessary to completely remove the whole gland when only a fraction of the prostate is cancerous...new skills have been developed so that removing the whole gland may not be necessary. This means leaving normal tissue alone and going after the abnormal tissue. In that way, we are redefining the definition of what minimal is."
Gary Kalser, M.D., FACS, Board Certified Urologist, Florida Urology Associates
With over 30 years dedicated to medicine, Dr. Kalser brings a wealth of knowledge to his industry, and in particular, to his area of expertise, urology. When asked why he decided to pursue this specialization, Dr. Kalser said:
"My father was a physician, but I wanted to be more than just a physician I wanted to be a physician that actually worked with my hands. I wanted to be more a surgeon. Just being a physician alone would not really satisfy my need of being able to fix things using a combination of my brain and my hands. That's where urology comes in because it's a very good mixture of both surgical and cognitive skills."
As a thought-leader in his field, Dr. Kalser is not just a practicing physician, but he is also an innovator. It is important to Dr. Kalser to improve the safety of patients undergoing urological care, as well as advancing new technologies. Over the last ten years, he has authored nine patents and has many more pending. Some of these patents include modifications and improvements to the Foley catheter which has not be changed since 1940. In addition, Dr. Kalser has also worked on improving prostate cryotherapy technologies. He is particularly focused on erectile nerve sparing techniques that don’t compromise cancer eradication. Dr. Kalser is also focused on minimally invasive techniques. He noted:
"When it comes to prostate cancer, it's not necessary to completely remove the whole gland when only a fraction of the prostate is cancerous. In the early days of breast cancer treatment, for example, it was recommended that a radical mastectomy be performed to remove the entire breast for a very small tumor. And the same was true with prostate cancer. But new skills have been developed so that removing the whole gland may not be necessary. This means leaving normal tissue alone and going after the abnormal tissue. In that way, we are redefining the definition of what minimal is."
Dr. Kalser has served in a variety of leadership positions, including formerly serving on the board of directors of the Orange County Medical Society and as the Chairman of the Orlando Regional Medical Center. Dr. Kalser is an active member of many medical organizations including the American College of Surgeons, the SES and the American Urological Association.
