Dr. Karl Linden, University of Colorado Boulder Professor, Is New President of International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA)

The International Ultraviolet (IUVA) recently announced a new president, Dr. Karl Linden, Professor of Environmental Engineering at University of Colorado Boulder. Dr. Kati Bell will become president of the IUVA in 2015. A founding member, Dr. Jim Bo

The board of directors and members of the International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA) announced their new President, Dr. Karl Linden, Professor of Environmental Engineering at University of Colorado Boulder at the September 2013 World Congress held in Las Vegas in conjunction with the International Ozone Association (IOA). Dr. Linden has researched and developed UV technology since the early 1990s. From New York City, Linden graduated from the esteemed Bronx High School of Science, and studied environmental engineering at Cornell University as an undergraduate. He attended University of California Davis for his MS and PhD graduate studies in environmental engineering. Linden is currently leading a team to develop a solar toilet as part of the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge funded by the Gates Foundation, among other projects.

As Dr. Linden assumes the helm of the IUVA, the leadership he brings to the organization is motivated by harnessing the inherent creativity and strengths of the board of directors and membership to continue the unique educational programming of IUVA and further the impact in areas outside of North America and in UV applications in addition to water. Linden will collaborate with partner organizations and forge new alliances. "I look forward to engaging the passions of our board of directors and membership in creating programs, webinars and essential educational content for the organization and our constituencies," commented Dr. Linden.

At the World Congress 2013, an all-day symposium was organized by Dr. Linden and Dr. Mihaela Stefan that paid tribute to the life and work of a long time IUVA member and eminent scientist: Dr. James Bolton, President of Bolton Photosciences, Inc. in Alberta, Canada. Dr. Bolton, who also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the IUVA, is a founding member of the organization. Bolton says, "What better honor can one receive but to have friends, colleagues and former students organize such a special symposium? The Lifetime Achievement Award was also very special, and I thank the Awards Committee very much for recognizing my work." James Bolton is a pioneer in UV technology. His studies on ultraviolet light applications reach back 40 years. Bolton has published over 170 archived papers on photochemistry and UV technologies.

Kati Bell, an Environmental Engineer who is a Principal with CDM Smith in Nashville, will assume the position of President of the IUVA in 2015. She has worked in water and wastewater treatment facilities and is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and Tennessee Technological University.

IUVA's mission is to advance the science, engineering and applications of ultraviolet technologies to enhance the quality of human life and to protect the environment. Visit iuva.org.
