Dr. Recommends 10 Summer Time Pet Healthcare Tips

Warmer weather beckons us outdoors to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air. There are more walks with Fido the dog, and Fluffy the cat enjoys rolling in the grass every now and again. Read below to learn some guidelines needed to ensure that this summer

1.) NEVER LEAVE YOUR PET IN A VEHICLE!

Though it may seem cool outdoors, if the sun is shining, you can bet that the temperature inside a vehicle can climb high enough to cause heat stroke in a matter of minutes, even if the window is rolled down a little.

2.) ALWAYS HAVE WATER AVAILABLE TO YOUR PET!

With their fur coats, it is easier to overheat quickly. Our pets lose fluid from their bodies when they are hot and panting. With water available, you will keep your pet from becoming dehydrated.

3.) KEEP YOUR PET WELL GROOMED!

A dirty, matted hair coat prevents a dog or cat from cooling itself efficiently. Regular brushing, combing and bathing can help avoid overheating. Also, wet, matted hair invites flies and may leave your pet prone to maggot infestations, especially under the tail and around the genital area.

4.) PREVENT FLEAS, TICKS, INTESTINAL PARASITES AND HEARTWORMS!

Although prevention of these parasites is recommended year-round, they are more prevalent in the warmer months. The comfort and health of your pet is dependent on preventing these parasites. Check with your veterinarian for the product that most suits your environment and pet's needs. Be cautious of over-the-counter products because some may be toxic or even deadly if used inappropriately or in breeds sensitive to the active ingredient(s). Always consult a veterinarian before using ANY medication on your pet.

5.) KEEP VACCINES CURRENT!

Many pets are taken for walks, vacations and other excursions, thus increasing their chances of being exposed to other animals and people. Protect your pet's health by ensuring its vaccines are current and by keeping a copy of its veterinary records with you when you travel. When travelling out of state, you should carry a signed copy of your pet's rabies certificate.

6.) LIMIT EXERCISE ON HOT/HUMID DAYS!

Pets need exercise even when it is hot, but limit the exercise to early morning or late evening to avoid overheating/dehydrating. Remember that asphalt can get very hot and burn your pet's pads and paws. Extra caution should be taken with old, very young, heavy coated, overweight and/or short nosed pets.

7.) HEATSTROKE IS AN EMERGENCY!

Watch for signs of a heatstroke and contact a veterinarian IMMEDIATELY if any of the following signs occur:

• excessive panting

• unresponsive to commands

• staring/glazed eyes

• warm, dry skin

• fever

• rapid heart rate

• vomiting

• collapse

8.) PETS CAN GET SUNBURNED TOO!

You may need to apply a sunscreen to your pet's nose and ear tips, especially if they are white or light colored. Fly strikes on these areas can also be very painful, and some products combine both sunscreen and an insect repellant.

9.) PROVIDE SAFE MEANS OF TRAVEL!

Pets should be secured inside the vehicle when travelling preferably with a harness or carrier that attaches to the seatbelt. It is NOT safe (and illegal in some states) to allow a dog to ride in the bed of a pickup truck.

10.) AVOID LARGE CROWDS!

Concerts, fairs, Fourth of July fireworks, etc. can create crowds and loud noises, further stressing pets on an already hot day. It is best to simply leave your pet at home in the air conditioning or outdoors in a well-shaded area with plenty of water to avoid the dangers of overheating.
