Cleveland, OH, November 11, 2015 (Newswire.com) - Dr. Robert C. Gilkeson, Director of Cardiac Imaging, Harrington-McLaughlin Heart and Vascular Institute, has joined The Expert Network, an invitation only service for distinguished professionals. Gilkeson has been chosen as a Distinguished Doctor™ based on peer reviews and ratings, numerous recognitions, and accomplishments achieved throughout his career.
Gilkeson outshines others in his field due to his extensive educational background, recognitions, and career longevity. He holds a BA from Princeton University, and an MD from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, where he also served as a fellow. He completed an internship and residency at University Hospitals of Cleveland, as well as residencies and fellowships at Duke University Medical Center.
"I'm very interested in the use of radiology and imaging to effectively screen early-stage and treatable diseases. My particular interest is in coronary artery and lung cancer screening. But in general the use of imaging - which I think is traditionally seen as an expensive modality - is ultimately a very efficient way to identify and hopefully treat early-stage diseases far better than we have done in the past."

With 18 years dedicated to medicine, Gilkeson brings a wealth of knowledge to his industry, and in particular, to his area of expertise, cardiac radiology. When asked why he decided to specialize in radiology, Gilkeson said:
"I'm very interested in the use of radiology and imaging to effectively screen early-stage and treatable diseases. My particular interest is in coronary artery and lung cancer screening. But in general the use of imaging - which I think is traditionally seen as an expensive modality - is ultimately a very efficient way to identify and hopefully treat early-stage diseases far better than we have done in the past."
As a thought-leader in his industry, Gilkeson is a contributing member to a number of prominent organizations. He has developed a reputation for offering compassionate care and has conducted research at a number of institutions and lectured widely, all while keeping his sights set on providing some of the best radiological work available. He has been a visiting professor at universities around the world, including Samedan Spital in Switzerland and the Pendergrass Lecturer position at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. With a ceaseless concern for offering the highest quality care available, his finger is always on the pulse of recent developments in his field. He noted:
"I think the trend that we certainly are most invested in is trying to understand the rise of consumerism in healthcare delivery. We have to understand the effect of the internet on individual patients regarding their increased awareness of their care. We need to be constantly available and accessible, and as efficient as possible with the care that we give our patients."
Dr. Gilkeson currently serves as a Vice Chairman of Research in the Department of Radiology and the Director of Non-invasive Cardiac Imaging in the Harrington-McLaughlin Heart and Vascular Institute at University Hospitals & Case Medical Center. He has been voted one of Cleveland Magazine’s Best Doctors for the past three years in a row. Gilkeson is currently a member of the American Roentgen Ray Society, American College Of Radiology, Radiologic Society of North America, Society of Thoracic Radiology (Senior Member), and the Society of Cardiac Computed Tomography. He serves as a Journal Reviewer for the American Journal of Radiology, Respiratory Care, Society of Cardiac Computed Tomography, Academic Radiology, and RadioGraphics, where he also serves as an associate editor. He sits on the editorial board for the Journal of Thoracic Radiology. In 2014, he served as the Cardiac Section Editor for RadioGraphics.
