DTU Students Go Online To Help Student Community
Online, October 12, 2010 (Newswire.com) - Standing in the long queues to get your notes and question papers photocopied is a really harrowing task, especially when you are already running short of time and pocket money. Thereafter you even need to buy a book at the last moment as you just got to know that half the paper is coming straight out of its pages.
One such day, in the cold December, Anand Meena, a computer science second year student was waiting in the college photocopy shop with his seniors Samrat Malik and Divya. It took them over an hour to get ten pages notes each attended to. Though most others were pretty used to this waiting by then, a little something struck in these students' minds. A student's plight is best understood by a student himself. So this bright team of students from Delhi Technological University, formerly Delhi College of Engineering decided to find a good solution; and they did. They used the mightiest tool in today's world, the internet. The idea of Aglasem germinated in their grey cells in the month of January and they started working on the layout, content and everything else. Within twelve days, they launched "www.Aglasem.com. The team consisted of six students Anand Meena, Samrat Malik, Divya, Abhishek Bindal, Anwesha Bose, Aakash Agarwal; all from DCE.
Aglasem, literally meaning, "The next semester", is an online student portal that houses anything and everything to make the student's life smoother. In its baby stages, the university library helped them out by providing them previous year question papers and syllabus to upload on the portal. The herculean task of scanning the hundreds of papers was enthusiastically undertaken by the team. Aglasem was a huge success in the first go itself. Now no student had to painfully spend money or time arranging for these things.
Soon the team realised one more important thing. The college is so big and so full of things going on that students were unable to keep a track of these. Thus happened "DTU Updates". All the news, notifications were covered here. This got so popular that students from NSIT too joined in to make things good in their college. The team grew bigger and better. They started working with full enthusiasm for the student community. Thereafter "Aglasem Downloads" was introduced where you could download course books, learning softwares, tutorials and much more. Then the "Aglasem Forum" brought a smile on every body's face. Here the students could carry out fruitful college related discussions. This forum proved to be a boon for the admission procedure too this time.
The story only gets happier hereafter. Now "DTU Updates" is "Aglasem Updates" as the team has now grown to cover Jamia, JNU, IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, ISM Dhanbad, IPU, DTU and NSIT.
The section on Higher Studies includes information on GRE, CAT, and GATE; their schools and entrance examinations. Students even get career help in the placements section where they get placement papers, resume building guide and company information. These sections make Aglasem a favourite among students all over the world.
At present 14 students of DTU, 7 from NSIT and 2 from IP in the core team who work dedicatedly for Aglasem, and apart from these numbers there are around 35- 40 volunteers who work exclusively for the various sections.
The revenue generated Google Adsense is utilised in the running charges of the website that include its hosting / domain charges, scanning costs, volunteer payments. Being a student community website its main aim is not to earn money but to help students and save environment.
Among its large viewership base, it is most popular in Northern India. As per various sources on the internet, there are more than 40 million registered websites among which Aglasem stands in the top .5%. According to Google Analytics, there are more than 10,000 visits per day majority of which is direct traffic and more than 2500 unique visitors per day, which clearly explains its popularity! The top 10 countries from which Aglasem gets its major traffic source are: India, United States, Canada, Brazil, Russia, United Kingdom, Pakistan, Mexico, Germany and Turkey.
Today every DTU, NSIT, IP student checks up on Aglasem updates. Often they express their opinions on certain topics. From the "downloads section", they get everything they require to work on new software's, get their course books and suggested study material. Starting from the day you enter the college (Admission help) to your semester exams (all the question papers, books, study materials) all the way down to your placements (Placement papers), Aglasem ensures the student has everything he needs.
The future plans focus on completely covering IPU and all engineering colleges in Delhi, then focus on others starting from NITs and starting a 'AglaSem Online Placement Cell' to discuss career related topics and read about experiences of working employees in various companies.
In the immediate work table, they are working on the social network of various colleges like www.groupdce.aglasem.com - DCEites social network and www.ipuvilla.aglasem.com - a social network for IPU, for student interaction and alumni connect facility.
This complete student help web portal has more plans, a growing team and the zeal to be better every day.
